In recent years, women’s independent wrestling has developed a passionate following in the U.S. and Canada, thanks largely to promotions like SHIMMER (based in Berwyn, Illinois), SHINE (Ybor City, Florida), NCW Femmes Fatales (Montreal, Quebec), and Women Superstars Uncensored (Voorhees, New Jersey), among others.

a

Former SHIMMER champion Saraya Knight (the mother of WWE NXT women’s champion Paige) is working to build up women’s wrestling in the United Kingdom. Along with her husband, the recently-retired “Rowdy” Ricky Knight, Saraya has built Bellatrix Female Warriors, a women-only promotion based in Norwich, England.

Featuring a mix of homegrown talents trained in the Knights’ school, as well as an assortment of formidable international talent, Bellatrix is cultivating a dedicated international fan base.  Read More

On Saturday February 22nd, 2014 from the Alpine Club in Kitchener, Ontario, PWA Wrestling held “Winter Slam” that saw the PWA Women’s Champion Beautiful Beaa defend her title against the newcomer and #1 Contender Skylar Rose.  In the opening moments of the bout Skylar Rose tried to take a short cut and get at the championship belt which upset Beaa so she pulled it away from Rose and then started to chase her around the outside of the ring.  Skylar Rose would make her way back into the ring first.  Rose planned a sneak attack on Beaa as she re-entered the ring and tried to hit the champ with an elbow drop however Beaa moved out of the way and Rose smashed into the mat missing her.  The champion would take advantage of the situation as Rose got back up to her feet Beaa put her in an arm ringer and then executed a beautiful top rope arm drag that snapped Skylar Rose hard down to the canvas.

a

Beaa vs Skylar21Beaa vs Skylar24The champion tried to keep the pressure on her challenger and moments later whipped Skylar Rose into the turn buckles and then tried to follow her in with a huge clothesline in the corner but Rose moved out of the way and Beaa missed her and crashed hard into the buckles.  Skylar Rose saw her opening to do a lot of damage on Beaa as she put the boots to her with some mean heel stomps and then followed that up with some vicious chokes.  Skylar Rose had done her homework as she knew that Beautiful Beaa relies heavily on her speed and energy so Rose took her down to the mat and applied a couple of solid wear down holds in an attempt to sap the champion’s strength.

Beaa vs Skylar19Beaa vs Skylar25Beautiful Beaa would fight her way back up onto her feet but Skylar Rose was ready for this and grabbed Beaa by the hair and snapped her back down into the mat hard which saw the back of Beaa’s head bounce off of the canvas.  Skylar Rose had all of the momentum in her favour at this point in the bout as she would get the champion back up to her feet and continued to punish her with more stomps and chops in the corner.  The champion Beautiful Beaa would sag against the turnbuckles in serious trouble.  However, Skylar Rose would make a big mistake as she turned to the crowd to let them know what she thought of them which left an opening for Beaa and she took Rose by the head and gave her some hard forearms in the head.  Beautiful Beaa then whipped Rose into the other turnbuckles and tried to follow Rose in to land a big shot but Rose jumped over her and then slapped the champion hard across the face. BhW9SHbCEAESZsDWhen Allysin Kay and Leah Von Dutch last met it was Kay who was left on the mat defeated and LVD running away as the new AWI Women’s Championship like a thief in the night.  Thus, on Saturday March 29th, 2014, Allysin Kay will challenge Leah Von Dutch to find out just who is the real AIW Women’s Champion at Girls Night Out 11.  Of course Von Dutch won’t be coming to the ring alone as she will be accompanied by her henchman the Duke.

Xandra Bale made her in ring return on Sunday February 23rd, 2014 at SMASH Wrestling’s “Danger Zone” following her broken fibula back in October in a losing effort to Vanessa Kraven where Mickie James was the special referee. Ringbelles.com reported the following quote from Xandra Bale on the incident and injury:

a

“I broke my right wrist in the match on the weekend. I knew I hurt it on the finish of the match so I got to the back and threw some ice on it hoping it was a sprain and just sat there for a while kind of in disbelief that I managed to do that in my first match back. I went to the hospital to get it X-rayed after it swelled up quite a bit and sure enough it was broken. I’ve delayed in putting it out there because my parents are away and I needed to email them to tell them but they took over a day to get back to me due to poor internet access. I also had taken a number of bookings for March, April and May that I was really excited for but needed to cancel personally before I told everyone else.

a

“I just want to thank everyone again for all their support and well wishes from those that already know. And again re-iterate that this was my own fault and I had a great time wrestling Vanessa Kraven. By no means should this come off negatively on her because she did nothing wrong. As far as prognosis goes, I’m out indefinitely for now. It’s a more serious break than the leg. I’ll have a better idea in a week when I see the specialist but this is a lot to put on my work and my family in a few short months. My heart is very much still in wrestling and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t crushed right now to be missing out on many big opportunities I had booked coming up.  But on the bright side, the leg felt great!”

NCW Femmes Fatales will present their first show at their new home, the LGH Centre, on Saturday April 19th 2014, and fans will be able to witness an International Dream Match as Scotland’s Nikki Storm will make her Canadian debut against Quebec, Canada’s leader and representative around the world, LuFisto. As you can hear and see in the video clip below Nikki Storm has a big mouth but she also has the talent to back those words. Will she be able to win her first match in Femmes Fatales or will she, like a lot of people before her, fall to LuFisto?

Portia Perez had her hands full in 2013, thanks to Femmes Fatales’ superhero, Pink Flash Kira. During their last encounter Portia tried to leave the building but she was stopped by Ontario’s Top Team lead by Courtney Rush, Xandra Bale, Leah Von Dutch and their newest member, Kaitlin Diemond. On Saturday April 19th, Perez will have the chance to get her revenge by facing Kaitlin Diemond.  Perez has stated that she will scale the Ontarian pyramid and be victorious.  As for Kaitlin Diemond, she has trained all winter in Mexico and wants to show her evolution inside the squared circle against Perez so wrestling fans don’t you dare miss out on this classic confrontation in the Battle Of Ontario!
