I recently had the opportunity to interview one of Canada’s newest wrestling stars Aria Sapphire. Sapphire is from Mississauga, Ontario and was trained at the Battle Arts Academy by owner Anthony Carelli who is better known as former WWE Superstar Santino Marella. She was also trained by Japanese Legend Yuki Ishikawa and International Superstar “Hornet”Sapphire has recently travelled to Japan where she will be completing even more extensive training and she will be wrestling for various promotions as well.
a

aria2Sapphire is currently staying in east Tokyo and is training at the Ice Ribbon Dojo and is with the Japanese wrestling promotion called Reina. She is training at the Zero One Dojo as well. Aria is primarily working for Reina Joshi Puroresu, which is an all women’s wrestling company in Japan where Kana, now known as Asuka in the WWE has placed her.

Aria Sapphire’s first match in Japan took place in the first ring on a Reina show in Tokyo. It was a one on one contest against Makoto. Sapphire had Makoto locked into an octopus submission hold (just one of her many different finishers) and had her clearly beaten however Makoto was saved by the bell because this was only a five minute time limit try out match and time had expired.

a

When ask about what some of the most fun things she did when she first arrived in Japan Aria replied:
“The most fun I’ve had here is going out after shows with the fans as there is a restaurant with many tables. The one time that stood out most for me was when we ate Korean BBQ in Osaka and the wrestlers got to meet each and every fan. We switched tables every 5 minutes and this gave the fans a chance to get to know us and us the chance to know them because let’s be real who doesn’t bond over food?”

a

Aria1Sapphire’s second match was a tag team match but unfortunately it was difficult for them. When asked about this Aria said “We didn’t have any shared tag team moves because of the language barrier, it was really hard to communicate with my partner but I know we killed it in the ring and I almost managed to land my Samoan drop finisher. Had I landed it, I’m sure we would have stole the victory!”

a

Sapphire said that there was definite eye opening moments in this match “My favourite part in the match was when we were trading forearms, those were hard hitting impacts that I’ve never felt in Canada! These girls are tough cookies! It was very traditional Japanese women’s wrestling with the traded forearms! Tough chicks for sure! In the end my tag partner unfortunately lost the match up while I was held out of the ring by the opposing sides partner.”

a

Aria4When I asked Sapphire about who some of her inspirations are and why she picked Japan she said:
I’ve always looked up to Chris Jericho, he was my favourite wrestler growing up and still pretty much is. I remember dreaming of coming to Japan primarily for this reason and because of my respect for all the wrestlers who’ve moved their lives here to pursue their dreams, my knowledge is much richer now. I realize how hard it is to move one’s life here, especially at first with the language barrier. It makes it hard to show your talent at times but slowly you understand how to communicate through wrestling alone, it has allowed me to communicate with my fans through my emotions and moves in the ring. It can also make training hard at times but learning through “monkey see, monkey do” I’ve been able to step out of my comfort zone and learn many new moves and styles such as my recent experiences with Lucha in Japan”

a

Sapphire would go on to explain what life is like there and her current living conditions:
The life here is very different! It is at times very congested and the trains are always packed, as well the houses/apartments are quite small in comparison to what I’m used to! I sleep on the floor on a thin mattress here like all the other wrestlers and that makes us even tougher! I definitely have learned a lot being here just over a month now and I expect to learn much much more before I’m due to leave.”

a

North Starz.ca would like to thank Aria Sapphire for taking the time out of her busy schedule to take part in this interview and wish her nothing but success during her time in Japan. Please make sure to be on the lookout for continuous updates about Aria Sapphire’s matches in Japan.

On Friday December 4th, 2015, in Guelph, Ontario, PWA (Pure Wrestling Association) held “Spirit Of The Season” which feature a women’s triple threat match for the PWA Women’s Championship between the reigning champ Alexia Nicole and her challengers former champ Beautiful Beaa and Kaitlin Diemond.

a

It was a very competitive and entertaining match between the three women with many high flying and brawling maneuvers.  With Alexia Nicole losing her champion’s advantage she had to wrestle smart and take advantage of every opportunity which she did.  When it looked as though Beautiful Beaa was going to pin Diemond to regain the championship it would Alexia who would pounce on the opportunity instead by tossing Beaa off and pinning Diemond to successfully defend her championship.

On Saturday December 5th, 2015, from St. Catharines, Ontario, Crossfire Wrestling held “Jingle Bell Brawl IV”.  On this card the Crossfire Women’s Champion Kaitlin Diemond squared off against the Hardcore Princess Jewells Malone.  This was a very even match between both ladies as they were able to incorporate a mixture of technical wrestling, power moves and some rule breaking.  Diemond was able to escape Malone’s deadly Crown Jewells finisher and was able to reverse things by getting the challenger into a brutal crossface and Malone had no choice but to submit to this vicious hold.

12248631_10206871670168748_898467704_nNorth Starz.ca has named Gisele Shaw the Wrestler Of The Month for December 2015.  Shaw is a Storm Wrestling Academy graduate who burst onto the wrestling scene early this year.  She has taken on all challenges in the Prairies but is more than willing to travel east to Ontario of Quebec or south to the US to show the women there just who is number one.  Shaw has recently had a feud with Rachael Ellering and there is definitely a lot of unfinished business between them.

s

Shaw’s athleticism, strength and in ring abilities is something that all of her opponents should be aware of as she is definitely a force to be reckoned with.  So wrestling fans keep your eyes open for Gisele Shaw going into 2016.

On Saturday November 29th, 2015, at the Queens Of Combat 7 event WWE Tough Enough Competitor Chelsea Green squared off against Crazy Mary Dobson in a one fall match up.  It was a crowd pleasing give and take match up as both women pulled out all the stops however in the end it would be Dobson who would come out the victor over Green in impressive fashion.

On Sunday November 29th, 2015, the Holiday Havoc Wrestling promotion held “Holiday Havoc in Greektown”.  On this show two of the best high flyers in the women’s division Alexia Nicole and Xandra Bale squared off.  As expected it was a back and forth, high paced, action packed match up but in the end it was Alexia Nicole who was able to hit a wheelbarrow stunner On Bale which did enough to keep her down for the three count.  This was definitely a statement victory for Alexia Nicole as she has emerged as one of the top wrestlers in Ontario.

It’s been over a decade since Laura Dennis was nothing more than a wide-eyed teenager, stepping into the squared circle for the first time.

Now, known throughout the pro wrestling world as Cherry Bomb, the former Londoner has come a long way.

“When I think back to when I first started, I was just 17,” she remembered. “I had never even played sports growing up and it was the most physically demanding thing that I’d ever experienced. At the beginning I had a lot of self-doubt and a lot of confidence issues. But when I started to get it, I fell in love with being able to do those things . . . eventually there I was, jumping off the top rope and flipping. Once I started doing it I just became sort of obsessed.”  Read More

On Sunday November 22nd, 2015 in London, Ontario, SMASH Wrestling held “London Calling” which saw a Triple Threat match between Candice LeRae, Jennifer Blake & Courtney Rush.  This was a much anticipated match because all three ladies want to stake their claim as being the best woman in SMASH Wrestling. It was a back and forth match between all three competitors both inside and outside of the ring however the injured Cherry Bomb stuck her nose into the match by distracting the deranged Courtney Rush virtually taking her out of the match which gave the chance for LeRae to roll up Blake in a school girl pin to pick up the hard fought win.
